WHERE ARE HARTFORD'S NUMBERS?

The marketing slogan for Hartford, "New England's Rising Star" might be changed soon to "Hartford...We're not as bad as Bridgeport".

That might not apply to the Registrar of Voters Office though. As of 1:30 PM today the Secretary of the State's website still doesn't have Hartford's election result numbers posted.

I am getting numerous calls regarding the State Representative races, particularly the 6th District. I have to wonder why the 1st District, Matt Ritter's race, had the results from the Bloomfield portion of the district posted almost immediately, yet Hartford's have not been reported yet.

The 1st District is also where some of the biggest problems occurred on election day, including voters leaving polling places in disgust. Mark Twain School in particular, when they ran out of ballots. Fortunately both Mayor Segarra and Working Families Party Registrar Urania Petit, as well as myself, were all at Twain School to witness the chaos. They both worked quickly to try to rectify the problems.

But back to my original question. Where are the numbers? This does not instill confidence in the voters when numbers from what seems a fairly simple process aren't reported. How is it that suburban towns with much smaller staffs accomplish the task on time and Hartford and Bridgeport can't?

  1. Kevin, they need time to manipulate the votes. Hang in there.

  2. Suburban towns may have less voters, polling places, absentee ballots? I'm thinking so that you don't have to.....

  3. the Big One,

And as I said in the original post , we have far more staff in the Registrars Office in Hartford than in those suburban towns, just look at their budget. I know many of those "staff" and "consultants" are purely dead wood getting their payback for being loyal politicos, but we should expect a more efficient operation that can produce some results on a timely basis.

  4. Kevin...they will get around to tabulating the votes just as soon as Carlos Costa finishes putting the granite over their countertops.

  5. I truly believe that Dan Malloy is the better candidate for Governor of the great state of Connecticut and that is why I voted for him. I had a chance to hear him several times and was very impressed with his genuine responses to every question that was put forth.

I campaigned for him and believe that Gov. Malloy would be a great Governor to work with if I become the Mayor of Hartford. That is why I am so very upset at the state of affairs at the Registrar of Voters offices around the state and here in Hartford. It is unacceptable that polling stations ran out of ballots. There is no excuse or rational for this incompetence.

The whole office needs to be voted out! The fact that there are (3) Registrars of Voters here in Hartford would lead one to think that there would be plenty of checks and balances. Running out of ballots is like the Exxon Valdez running aground and spilling 750,000 barrels of oil and then saying I'm sorry. We now have a huge cloud over the election results that absolutely did not have to be there.

The Governor is the governor of all of the people. It is hard enough to pull together opposing interest when all is going well. Now because of the incompetence in the Registrars Offices and Secretary of States office, he will have to govern under compromised election results.

The Registrars serve us the people. We elected them! Their political patron approach to executing their job is both offensive and inappropriate. They work for us the voters not the party bosses.

They have unnecessarily clouded Dan Malloy's win. If these people are voted back into office in 2012 then shame on us. Managing the election is their primary job and on Tuesday November 2, 2010 they allowed the ship to run aground. The Captain should not be promoted the the rank of an Admiral, The captain should not be demoted, the Captain should be out of a job!

  6. I received a call regarding the lack of results. It turns out that the write in votes were not included on the moderators sheets and never reported or certified.
The Registrars office claims to be working with the Secretary of the States office on the matter.
    Now isn't that encouraging?
I / we should know something Friday.

  7. I heard the unofficial results are Robles 2,250. Three write in voters combined 344.

  8. I meant three write-in candidates not voters.

  9. "(Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom) Foley's lead through the night did not survive the Third World election systems of the urban Democratic bastions of Bridgeport, Hartford, and New Haven, which always report their vote hours after everyone else, perhaps just in case Democratic candidates need a few extra votes once the votes from all other municipalities are committed."

Poor Malloy. My heart bleeds for the guy. He ran his campaign with taxpayer dollars, and was supported with the muscle of unions, public and other. But, the Bridgeport bureaucrats have gone and dirtied his good name.
But, I expect he'll get over it.

  11. What a time I had with Olga Vazquez in ROV office when I called to asked where our write in votes were. What lies she told. It is now Nov. 5 and we are in the 21st century. What is wrong with these folks? I want my vote counted and I should not have to wait for these dishonest dopes to get their act together.

  12. The numbers were available the next day. Every Council Member received a copy of the unofficial candidate votes by district dated Wednesday, November 3, 2010. Citywide participation of 39.59% with the lowest coming from Roldan's districts:
    15 (29.09%)
    16 (28.14%)
    17 (20.52%)
    18 (31.23%)

  13. Ok, not sure why the official numbers haven't been posted on the Sec. of the States website yet. I also understand that the registrars office messed up the "write-in" numbers and those were supposed to be counted on Friday.

As was the case in Bridgeport, how do you not include votes that were cast?

  14. Why is it that Hartford Council members, that were not even running for anything (except Mr. Ritter) were able to get unofficial results and the actual candidates didn't? (re: Anonymous, 11/6, 6:27pm)

The numbers were phony anyway, because the Write-Ins apparently were not included on the moderator sheets that were submitted to the registrars office.

I have been summoned to come and watch the ballots get counted tomorrow (Tuesday 11/9. Maybe then, real numbers (hopefully real) will be available for public consumption.

  15. This is on the secretary of state's website. Not sure if it helps.
