HPD's NEW WELLNESS PROGRAM?

Let me start this posting by saying we have a great Police Department in Hartford led by a great Chief who is going to take the Hartford Police Department to new heights .A few hundred very professional men and women make up that department and serve our City well every day. But as in any organization, there are a few people that you just have to shake your head and say "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?"

The latest is the story of Sergeant Troy Gordon, a street supervisor of Patrol Officers on the midnight shift. Recently Sgt. Gordon apparently felt the need to discipline a female officer on his shift after she called in that she was signing off at an area to conduct  a "directed patrol" or what HPD calls a 10-59 in their radio codes. From what I am told Gordon went to the location she called in and the Officer wasn't there. Now whether she had already left and forgot to clear the call with the dispatcher or signed off at the wrong location is not clear.

But regardless, when Gordon didn't find her where she signed off, he called her by radio to meet him in another parking lot. Gordon also called other patrol units to meet him in the lot. When the female officer arrived he instructed her to  get out of her cruiser and he ordered her to run circles around her car in front of her fellow officers. From what I am told he made her run circles for the next twenty three minutes during which she fell a few times , to her embarrassment in front of her peers.

To further compound his actions, from what sources are telling me, Gordon was questioned over the radio on a recorded channel by his Lieutenant as to why he was calling for the patrol cars to meet him at the lot. Gordon apparently lied to his immediate supervisor and told the Lieutenant that he was getting officers together to go search for a shotgun used in a robbery rather than tell him he was amassing the units that should be out patrolling the north end of Hartford to witness his alleged abuse of another officer.

This one should call into question Sergeant Gordon's fitness to supervise officer's as well as his common sense and judgement. This sounds more like a fraternity house hazing than it does the actions of a highly paid supervisor of the Hartford Police Department.

These are the tests of Chief Rovella that he will need to act fairly, but quickly on. The tone for Rovella's Administration need to be made quickly and let his supervisors know what he expects from them and what is acceptable. I am pretty confident that others will make different choices and fall in line with Rovellas expectations if they know that they will be held accountable for their actions and judgement.

It might come down to some tough love, but that has been lacking for far too long at HPD.  Much of the similar behaviors has resulted in large legal settlements or pending lawsuits for the taxpayers of Hartford, and in the end there are several issues in this matter that will most likely lead to large payouts once again, which I won't go into here.

The cardio workout probably isn't a bad thing, but the HPD gym is the place for that ,not a parking lot off Main Street

  1. Maybe if Sergeant Gordon focused on his primary function, being a police officer and supervisor for the police department rather than graabing all the PJ's possible, he would be better rested and thinking more clearly when he shows up for work, goes for a lot of others also.

  8. This race nonsense is geting out of hand, fact is, there are lazy white officers....lazy black officers, and lazy spanish officers. Then there are hard workin ones that come to work and do the job. Everyone her eis a grown up, if you steal or forget to register your 10 cars, then it is on you!!! Don't blame the system or others because you think you are ENTITLED to stretch the laws.......

  9. Gordon's actions in a number of cases have been called into question. The problem is that he does not have the ability to supervise and use good judgement at the same time. He blames everyone else for his errors.
Why throw Weston under the bus. He works days, not midnights? Bowza is too new to critizise. The other real poor supervisor north is O'Shea.

  10. The thick stew of ENTITLEMENT and ''do what you want'' is going to be flushed like a turd in a toliet very shortly. The art of being a lazy employee is about to end, if you want to do nothing and show up for a paycheck, then it is your time to leave. Go gurad Bradley airport or something, but stop draging down the rest of us with your child like antics. Instead of calling in sick once a month and further abusing the workers comp system, LEAVE!!!!!!!

Kevin your racism is pheneomenal I had a nice long talk with city council members and your evil and bigotry are coming to an end and all the disgruntled racist cops that give you all your information will be exposed too. I see you still havent posted about the destruction of evidence or the walmart scandal and both these incidents are on film seems to me your just an angry whiteman mad at the fact that there are black and hispanic people in prestigous positions take your butt to Tennesse or Georgia or South Carolina where they will welcome your racism with open arms!

Gordon was an embarrassment to HPD as an Officer and Is a bigger embarrassment as a Sergeant. Someone should go back and look into how he was ever promoted. Gordon's disciplinary File Is a mile long and he should have been fired a long time ago. It's a Dam Shame what that once Great Police Department turned Into over the last ten years!

  13. This blog is turning into a podium for disgruntled cops to cast aspersions on each others' character and shred each other. As a citizen of Hartford, I'm dismayed to see that some of the peope who have been chosen to protect us display this level of childishness and unprofessionalism toward each other. Remember, united we stand, divided we fall.

  14. hey marcus garvey,

so what is your plan to expose any officers in the police dept/ kevin too? mayby a rally or a sing along would help with your limited mental ability. And the main fact concerning the walmart incident is that there was never any complaint filed with internal affairs. no one at walmart pushed the issue. Second is, the evidence thing was handled and that officer is geting suspended..What else would you like to happen to him? maybe we should stone him like a salem witch trail....good luck with your empty threats...

  17. macho man.

My understanding is that an areest warrant is still pending with the Hartford County States Attorney,Gail Hardy, apparently the warrant application is "still on her desk" from what a source told me. Although I have been aware of the allegations, it has not been posted here yet since until the warrant is rejected or signed, it is a pending criminal matter which exempts if from disclosure under FOI. As soon as the video of the incident and the investigation is available, it will be here.

  18. Maybe Sgt Gorgon suffered some type of severe debilitating head injury when he crashed his motorcycle into the curb on Retreat Avenue when he chased the car south on Main Street with the ridiculous red and blue lights on it. I must say that thankfully I did not shoot him when he was running around with a gun in his hand while clad in a helmet and motorcycle suit. I thought Mad Max had come from thunder dome to assist the officers on C squad in our arrest of the bad guys. Any who, I was relived to see him ride away uninjured in the back of an ambulance with an ice pack on his shoulder.

  19. All these racially motivated comments are ridiculous. You still try to get free handouts and special treatment because of the color of your skin and for what your great, great grandparents who you don't even know went through. Get over it! Stop blaming "whitey" for all your problems and take some responsibilty for your own foolishness. It's the person, not the color of the person.

And don't worry, there's a white guy on midnights on a downward spiral too, practically performing in the X-games on workers comp.

  21. Anonymous 3:45PM,

she needs to get some better advisors that know what they are talking about. Up to this point those that have told her to make it into a racial issue have been doing her a huge disservice. The videos and accompanying documents apparently tell the true story and it has nothing to do with the color of her skin. My understanding is that Monday is the day or reckoning and I seriously hope she talks to a good attorney that will tell her the way it is. Yhere are two things that would prevent her from prevailing with a Labor hearing if she forces her termination and possible arrest, lying or stealing as a police officer. She has already messed up her fututre and I sincerely hope the decision she makes Monday doesn't compound that

  22. what’s the status with the luna investigation? He lies multiple times during an internal affairs investigation, instructs his ppo to lie for him for disobeying a direct order, they fire his ppo and they don’t do anything to him? I don’t want to work with thieves and liars anymore.

  23. That kid you speak of on C-squad has a drinking problem. He goes to Texas on vacation while on workers comp and while there I am told goes sky diving! There was also the time that he was drunk down town and assaulted that new kid Officer Steinmetz causing him to go out injured because of his elbow. It would be interesting to know how he said he was injured and if workers comp paid for it. He has crashed numerous police vehicle I believe two or three, was he intoxicated when he did? Somebody needs to do something but apparently he has dirt on someone in I.A. so nothing is gonna happen.

  24. Reading these comments from Hartford's "Finest" confirms my decision to leave Hartford.
My sympathy goes out to the few upstanding Officers who have to deal with all the Rif-Raf within their ranks.

  25. RB,

Don't leave yet, there is a new Sheriff in town named James Rovella. He is dealing with these officers fairly and quickly. There are a few officers that don't comprehend what a great career they have. Name one other occupation where with a GED and no college you can take home potentially $150,000 a year in salary. Unfortunately the actions of a few tend to cause HPD to be painted with a wide brush. I think once Chief Rovella sets the tone of no nonsense as well as fairness, these problems will tend to go away. This upcoming week should prove that,Most officers want to be protrayed as conscientous hard working public servants, not knuclehead boot and lobster stealing thieves.

  26. Mr. Brookman I have to say that this blog has been very informative.I also have to say that there are alot of people who post on here just to spread rumors an propaganda that in most cases isn't even true. I do have to say that Chief Rovella is fair and a good man. The Chief decided to take a chance on me even with the mistakes I made while a Hartford Police officer.Mr. Brookman I feel that you should not comment on situations that you have no knowledge of. If you wanted the true story as to what happened you could have reached out to me. The whole boot situation, there were no boots that were stolen and myself and the other officer involved spoke about it shook hands and that was the end of it.I had a domestic arrest which was finalized and now im moving. Chief Rovella gave me my punishment and I will accept like a man and come back a better Police Officer and more important a Human Being. I just feel that all the Officers that post on this page should either leave their name or if they have a problem with their co worker approach them face to face like a man. Respectfully Officer William R. Smith III

  28. aftReally? "Hartford's Finest" this website show how much unity there is in the department haha. No one bleeds blue anymore. Everyone is out for them selfs, and worrying about other peoples problems. Grow up....
Furthermore if you don't know anything about an investigation keep your two cents out of it. Worry about your self and get a life. Oh and to comment on Luna's and his PPO thing. To my understanding his PPO resigned before the investigation was done. If you really want a topic to right write about SGT. O'Conner now thats a topic. Where has he been ? "injured" ha. He can't even finish his own investigation and pawns it off. All that should've been avoided. The sgt. should've done his job. Since when aren't intoxicated parties allowed in booking, and wheres the video from booking when he told Luna '' to let go of the prisoner so he could fall'' really placing the City in Liability?. and stepping into there personal space in an assaultive manner. Here's an out standing sgt. who gets written up for sending inappropriate text messages. Final comment Will Smith said best. If you have an issue or concerns about something approach the officer man to man. Not like little girls posting things on a website.
