YMCA DIRECTOR OF WELLNESS ARRESTED ON GUN CHARGES, BUT WHO PROTECTS THE CHILDREN?

On 10/5/18 at approximately 1629 hours, officers responded to the Golden Nozzle Car Wash, 140 Weston St., in regards to a threatening with a firearm complaint. When the officers arrived, they met with the victim.

The victim stated she was in line at the car wash and backed her vehicle up in order to reposition it. The suspect, later identified as Andreas MCCAIN was behind her. The victim stated MCCAIN sounded his horn and pulled alongside of her. The victim stated MCCAIN exited his vehicle and engaged the victim in a verbal argument, at which point MCCAIN went back to his vehicle and retrieved a black pistol and threaten the victim.

The victim stated MCCAIN proceeded through the car wash and exited the lot where she captured photographs of MCCAIN'S vehicle and registration plate. After capturing these photographs, the victim phoned police.

Upon intake of the call, dispatchers alerted police of the incident and described MCCAIN'S vehicle and registration plate.
As the initial responding officers were interviewing the victim, officers observed MCCAIN operating his vehicle in the area of Zion St. and Wilson Street. Officers attempted to conduct an investigatory stop in the area Zion St. and Flatbush Avenue. MCCAIN stopped for the officers.

When MCCAIN observed the officers exit their vehicle, he fled south bound on Zion St. towards New Britain Avenue. Officers observed MCCAIN travel west bound on New Britain Ave. at a high rate of speed. MCCAIN collided with a motorist in the area of New Britain Ave. at Forster Street.

Officers placed MCCAIN into custody and located a semi-automatic pistol (later determined to be stolen). MCCAIN was transported to the hospital, debriefed by VCU Detectives and transported to the Hartford Police Booking Facility.

The victims of the collision were transported to the hospital for minor non-life threatening injuries sustained as a result of the collision.
CSD Detectives responded, processed the scene and collected the stolen semi-automatic pistol. C4 Analysts responded to the initial incident location and retrieved video.

According to the website for the Greater Hartford YMCA, McCain is listed as the Health and Wellness Director for the Y.

A further check into McCain's criminal background reveals a rather extensive criminal history that the Greater Hartford YMCA neglected and still put McCain in close proximity working with children. This information is all readily available to anyone with a computer and internet access.

It seems unconscionable that this is the level of care that the YMCA takes in protecting children entrusted to their care

He’s probably one of Mayor Bronin’s Second chance (x5) job placements.

  2. City Council wants more minority recruits for HPD, why not give him a spot in the class?

  3. He was probably recruited at the new Criminal Welcome Center located at City Hall. The recruiter probably has a similar record.

  4. He will get hired with HFD.

  5. Please everyone,,,have a little respect.. THE YMCA IS SIMPLY TRYING TO FOLLOW THE “LEAD” OF HARTFORD AND “ HIRE THOSE WHO REFLECT THE COMMUNITY” ,,,, I say the hit the mark

  6. Alot of these charges were presented over 11 years ago. Are we really judging someones worth ethics based off mistakes that occurred at 17 years old. Clearly he was doing something right for the YMCA if he was able to bump up to a Directors position despite being a felon. Majority of people in this world do not even reach with position WITHOUT a felony.

The charges also have NOTHING to do with "children" so the comment about "putting him in close proximity of children" is irrelevant. In fact, he was one of the primary people fighting to create activities to help children prosper.

America. So quick to talk about the next without knowing the full story. So quick to put everyone business on Blast and then when people are unable to secure a job because of things like this what does that do? Increase crime rate again.
I cant with you people LOL

The YMCA hired someone to be successful Director. Which is what he was

  7. I think you need to look at the Judicial documents again, many of the serious charges were from December of 2017

  8. I have read the charges from 2017. Those all just sum up to say that he fled from the police, resulting in a car accident while having someone else in the car. Just because they broke them up into numerous amount of charges, doesn't mean that the fact that it was basically a flee/refusal of arrest doesn't stand. (& technically those are all misdemeanors )

The gun threat charges are solely based on the response of 1 individual. From, what I have gathered initiated the argument and has threatened him with a gun. Not another witness not any footage from the Car Wash. So who's to say that they happened?

But, this blog is targeting whether he was a good fit at YMCA. Not all of the extra stuff. In addition, most of his role had nothing to even do with children at all. He was the director of the Wellness Center which is located upstairs in the facility where you have to be a minimum of 16years old in order to be at. The only areas where " children" were located was downstairs, which is separate from the Wellness Center and is under direction of another individual. As a director at the YMCA his role was to ensure that everyone worked out safety, ensure that the the center remained in budget, create fitness programs, etc. Which is what he did.

  9. lets not forget that he did actually pull over for the police. Police that had their guns out. I think it's safe to say based on how many ppl..especially African Americans that have been killed my police officers that anyone who would seen that would have had thoughts of fleeing in their minds.
Its natural reaction when presented with a threat to save your life by all means necessary.

But these aren't the stories we post.

  10. Did that fear also force him to commit the robbery he was charged with, and was he just planning ahead to eventually protect himself by carrying a pistol without a permit and the criminal possession of a firearm?

  11. the robbery that happened when he was 17year old boy? tossed from foster home to foster home? which prior to that lived in a home with a single mother bc his father died? that robbery??

    1. I personally knew andreas and is a member of the ymca and i must say this article paints a picture of very different picture of andreas while he did have a past, he was definitely recreating his image to be a model citizen very shocking to say the least i believe he's a good man that made bad decisions that day.
