SOME PERSPECTIVE ON GUN VIOLENCE IN HARTFORD

For anyone that doesn't understand that Hartford is a violent City with way too many guns on the streets, here is a pic of the shotspotter activation's for the past week. About the only area safe from gunfire in the City is on top of the old landfill off Jennings Road and the middle of the Connecticut River.

Whoever made the suggestion for "per diem cops"? Here is the reason why not.

Mayor Bronin, here is what happens when a City is short over 100 Police Officers, and this was a relatively quiet week

34 comments:

  1. Mayor Luke Bronin wants Hartford to be safe. However, over the years HPD union contracts granted by other administration were out of control. Some former HPD officers have over the top pensions. Because overtime was calculated into their pension. Hartford cannot afford this and it is time to think differently about city pensions. HPD it is time to move on and give back. The Hartford Firefighters have already stepped to the plate. Come on HPD do the right thing and give back!

  3. I made that suggestion. The fact of the matter is the taxpayers of Hartford (as few as we are) and the tax payers of CT cannot afford this. Like I said, had I ran my own private business the way the city runs the police dept I would be out of business within the week. Its time we started treating taxpayer money with respect, run gov like a business, and hire per diem cops so people aren't making 200k off overtime.

  4. The city not tax payers can afford another 100 cops Kevin stop with the BS poverty no jobs drugs are a result of the violence more cops womt solve that crisis

If you want to discuss gun violence on the streets of the City of Hartford here are the stories of two families that had multiple members murdered by punks with guns in the North End of the City. Each murder happened with plenty of witnesses, mostly other criminals and three of the four cases are unsolved.

Harry Baez was murdered on Center Street during a street fight. He was beating his opponent int he fight when another male rode up on a bicycle and shot him. In front of about 50 people watching the street fight. Police received little assistance from the public who apparently took a knee when police asked for help. The date of Harry's murder was 5-10-2002.

About one year later Harry Baez's brother Benjamin was shot to death while seated in a parked car at 1279 Main Street, Hartford. That case was just solved by the hard work of the Hartford Police.

Kendall Terry was shot to death outside of his Garden Street home on 11-11-1995. In front of many witnesses, mostly convicted felons and drug dealers. Again no one assisted police and the case remains unsolved. The police do have strong persons of interest but need someone int he community to come forward.

Kendall's brother Christopher Terry was gunned down on Martin Street on 4-24-2011 after being chased into the front yard of 37 Martin Street, Hartford. This crime happened in front of a street full of residents. Police received little help from the public.

Both of the Terry brothers murders remain unsolved.

That is the cost of gun violence on Hartford Streets. Families pay a terrible price and it can't go on. Give police the info they need to solve these crimes and the community will be safer.

    Stop taking that knee.

    2. Harry Baez and Benjamin two brothers ,both Los Solidos gang members who stole my brand new New York Yankees jacket from my locker at Hartford High back in the early 90s. No pity from me here. Screw them both they got what they deserved. They both terrorized the nieghborhood for years.

OK, so what is your solution until our elected "leaders" solve the problems that drive our crime? They talk a lot about poverty, drugs, guns and joblessness but I haven't seen them put a dent in the problem yet, so are we just supposed to live with it until we smarten up and elect some real leaders who have vision and actually care about the city as opposed to just profiting off of it?

  8. Violence is rampant. I heard a young man maybe 15 loudly ranting this nasty song as he walked along my neighborhood street in Hartford's Southend. Other youngsters walking were listening and tried not to look at him. All I could think was who is raring this young man. He looked angry. Parents need to be accountable. I do not think we need a police officer for every other person. However, children having children has to stopped. Hartford Police have a very difficult job and they do it well.

  11. 5:51 PM , I wonder if it was the same 15 year old that was in the Hartford Courant today reporting he was stopped by police Saturday morning at 4:30 AM in West Hartford with a backpack full of stolen goods.. The saddest part of the story was that West Hartford police HAD to release this punk back to his “parents”. What a joke ! Are there still parents left in Hartford? You know, the ones that DONT let their boys out at 4:30 in the morning.

  12. Can someone tell rendock to fix the power issue at police headquarters. Its geting kinda dangerous when all the lights go out in the hallways and booking. A Trump built building less then five years old would not have the these problems.

    Kaeperprick probably has CTE.
He should’ve protested why a certain 4% of the male population is responsible for nearly half of the felonies in this ‘no good’ country he has no respect for. Figure that stat into police hyper vigilance and feel the pain. There is a great under reporting of crime stats and my guess is it would upset a lot of people as it should. I believe truth creates justice, half truths creates anarchy.

  14. You think you got problems at the safety complex? Go take a tour of the firehouses, maybe 3 outta the 12 are in “decent” condition. You’ll find leaky roofs ,floors incapable of accommodating weight of the apparatus, faulty electrical/plumbing/HVAC,cockroaches/rats/mice/bedbugs,diesel dust stuck to walls, mold, antiquated dispatch computers and P.A. system, diamond plates covering holes associated with failing concrete on floors and lastly regarding real danger ,we don’t have fire arms to protect us from those thugs in booking that come to use the public bathroom or ask us for money or food or use the phone or........I hope Reggie has got another grant up his sleeve cause I don’t think you’ll get another ten years from these unkept relics. All the housekeeping duties in the world ain’t gonna mop that away.

  15. Anonymous October 18, 2017 at 10:19 PM you are correct. A Trump built building would have state of the art electrical systems, however, the invoices for this installation would not have been paid. Trump does not pay his suppliers and often threatens them with legal action to make them go away. If they are paid it's typically less after the courts get involved.

    To the anonymous of 6:31.

The joke is you. An anonymous poster without the courage to leave your name in making commentary. Your inconsequential message means zero.

The lack of citizen cooperation in unsolved homicides that affect the Hartford Community endangers the entire community. Known criminals allowed to operate w/o fear of being identified by the same community they afflict. That is why there are so many unsolved in the city. Police know the suspects but just knowing that info isn't enough to make an arrest.

And finally I actually did the job like hundreds of other retired men and women from the Hartford Police Department. We were never anonymous. So the next time you want to see a joke you might want to look into your mirror and I am in Hartford every day if you wish to discuss any issues.

  17. The politicians and judges are quite safe where they live and do not ever share the sidewalk with the feral kids running the streets, so what's the problem? Plus, they want to infringe your gun rights so the perps can roam free while you are searching for the key to your trigger lock and your ammo is stored in a safe at the gun club. It's just common sense gun control, that's all.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

The last time I went to Wethersfield DMV, there was an out of control family with feral kids, making more noise and harassment than everybody else put together, and an IQ in single digits except when it comes to scamming the welfare system, they are geniuses at that. It's just sad and even if it happens, it's a very long road back to integrate these people back into civilization.

Apparently you aren't looking in the right spots. Chris Lyon's has been a daily fixture in Hartford since his retirement. You may want to back off on the rhetoric and listen to what he has to say to appreciate the reality of life in Hartford, not what they expect you to believe.

Both Baez brothers were not angels and the point I made was that families suffer immensely from street violence. I'm pretty sure that the mother and surviving relatives of both brothers did not want or deserve to be part of the club of surviving members of murder victims.

And Mr. Anonymous poster, the theft of a jacket is not on the same spectrum as murder. I'd say right back at you with what you said but that would be inappropriate, just like your post.

  23. To Mr. 12:48. That's your new name since you must have forgotten yours.

Just today I visited Scotts Bakery to get some lunch and said hello to some citizens I used to deal with at Albany and Edgewood Streets. After leaving downtown saw some Enfield Street hangouts and said hello to some guys I used to arrest. Gee I was also by myself because I can walk on any city street w/o (that means without) much concern. Maybe I'll see sometime in the afternoon at that library. Just wear an anonymous or 1248 pin so I can recognize u

  24. Chris Lyons , Do you also have the same disdain for rape victims who opt to use the “Jane Doe” option ,do they not have courage? How about the nameless whistleblowers that have saved lives and/or exposed corruption with supplying anonymous info, do they not have courage? How about those thugs you arrested that use an alias like G-MONEY,,,LITTLE MO,,,,BIG WILLIE,,,,,KILLER KEMBO , do they not have courage? Sorry Chris but your old school style of policing has been replaced, I guess you didn’t hear about the two pj officers working a block party wearing “ DONT BE A SNITCH” T-shirts a couple years back. Maybe HFD’s Fire Marshall’s should wear “DONT FORGET THE MARSHMALLOWS “ T-shirts next time they investigate an arson fire.

Another idiotic comment by an imbecile.

Enforcing laws, knowing the bad guys by all names, real ans street names and locking up criminals to protect the law abiding citizens of Hartford are efforts that don't change because years go by. Tactics and strategies may change but the reason police are out there is to try to stop crime, identify those involved and to make crooks afraid to operate. That's not old school it's what needs to be done.

Sexual assault victims can't be compared to anonymous posters on a blog because they are victims of unspeakable crimes. Whistle blowers with legitimate complaints should remain anonymous as well but blog posters do so in anonymous form because they lack the reputation or courage to put their names to anything by writing nonsense just like you did Mr. 1045.

The police officers who wore those shirts exhibited terrible judgement and got disciplined just like they should have been by Chief Roberts. They set a terrible example and lowered themselves to the level of the creeps on the street that benefit from that street rule. That's something that no one in my old school time would ever let happen.

So have a nice weekend and think of some witty response and remain anonymous.

  26. It would be interesting for a statistical breakdown of the ethnicities of criminals arrested in Hartford especially with regard to Latins. Which countries or is it mainly a Puerto Rican crime wave. My guess is that the barios have emptied of the worse of the worse from the island and have migrated to mainland Hispanic communities. Anything to back this up? And please, no derogatory statements.
