ROBLES I.A.D. HEARING CONTINUED UNTIL FRIDAY

After a full day of hearings on Monday, the Hector Robles matter still hasn't been concluded.

The hearing has been continued until Friday and will resume at that time according to HPD sources. And for those who have been calling me concerned that a "deal" has been cut, the ongoing hearing would indicate that is not the case.

Stay tuned.

  1. You can tell your callers they don't cut deals at that hearing because it's recorded. Any deals would be made off the record.

PRICE OF SAFETY: There are sound arguments on both sides of the debate over requiring contractors, utilities and the town of Plymouth to station police officers at road construction sites, and the issue was aired out fairly thoroughly during a hearing last week. Basically, it comes down to whether the presence of police officers enhances safety sufficiently to warrant the higher cost. But some people, especially those in the ranks of unionized public employees, just don't get it. Detective Sgt. James Campbell of Thomaston, where such a law is in force, noted recently that officers who perform this "extra duty" are paid by the town, which bills the contractor. "It doesn't cost the town anything," he said. Apparently it didn't occur to him that contractors build such costs into their bids. Plymouth officials are still considering the proposal. One alternative that would save money while ensuring safety of passing motorists and construction workers would be to allow the use of civilian flagmen and -women, but mandate an appropriate level of training and experience.

Gracias, senorita. I've always thought that the masses should have a profound anal-yst on hand to provide commentary regardless of their (the masses) lack of gravitas. But, I really thought we were discussing a rather mundane, pedestrian issue.
