IN THE HOME STRETCH

Tomorrow is election day in Hartford. I have enjoyed the forums, the meetings, answering questions and generally trying to shed some light on what we need to do to move Hartford forward.

Hopefully I will have an opportunity to put those ideas and changes into effect as a Councilperson if enough people agree.

If you have the opportunity, please remind someone to go vote tomorrow , and if you are so inclined, ask them to vote for me on row D-3. Any support is greatly appreciated .

Rest assured though, no matter how this turns out, I fully intend to keep doing what I have been doing for the last few years to make Hartford a better place.

  2. I have to say Kevin I will vote for you, however I never saw you on Franklin Ave campaigning. I hope I just wasn't around that day, but if you get elected, please, please, please stop these paralyzing property taxes. It's killing all property owners, commercial and residential. Which could mean a possible pay cut for council members and other city workers. So remember it's all the taxpayers backs and onr more straw....

  5. you did miss me on Franklin Avenue, check the window of Allegro for my campaign sign, I spent a lot of time speaking to people on Franklin and throughout the Southend. And one of my major issues has been how the city is killing small businees with taxes and reckless spending, it has to end

  6. The city needs more clear-headed, bottom-lined, focused citizens to represent Hartford through the city council venue. Having a good ear for relevant issues and a determination to help bring the city back to being fiscally and civilly accountable, Kevin is a solid choice to fill this position. Good Luck!

  7. The WFP kicked azz...it was a real slap in the face to Pedro and Kennedy, the arcitects of that unholy alliance.Stay tuned for more surprises...

  9. Kevin,
You were doomed from the start by not being affiliated with Dems,Repubs,or working family parties .You needed to be in one of those parties to have a shot. You had no more of a chance than Edwin Vargas did !!!!
Look at the bright side you can continue your fight. Its much easier to have a blog and criticize all the politicians , police dept, council people , etc than it is to be in their shoes !!This is probably a blessing for you .Good Luck !
This comment is in no way to put you down in anyway . Just stating the facts .

Maybe so. How's it beneficial to the forlorn dump of a town?

  11. The most amazing thing to me concerning the vote results was the incredible low voter turnout. The low % vote totals,Pedro getting just over 3500 votes, when in recent years past a Democratic Mayor nomineee would get over 15,000 votes, is illustrative of a broken political organization, in which there is no leadership.

THe responsibility for the terrible voting % must stop at the door of the Mayor and the Party leaders. It is obvious for the world to see that the leadership of the town committee is incompetant.

  12. I meant 5300 votes for Pedro..my bad

  13. I realize that voting is important especially since so many people lost their lives for others to have the right to vote. I am just glad that the a certain percentage of people turned out to vote especially since the majority of them have had no lights for over 10days. It is so easy to sit back and assume rather than give the benefit of the doubt. For the people that were fortunate enough to get their lights back, thank you for taking the time to vote. A very special thank you for repealing that unjustified raise for the City Council. I would like to thank everyone else who actually worked on getting the vote out. Without your help there probably would have been a lower percentage especially in the aftermath of Alfred. Have a great day everyone.

  14. Towns hit harder by the storm had larger voting %'s then Hartford...instead of trying to pass the blame to a storm, lets lay it correctly where the blame belongs, with the party leadership and the Mayor.

The party is largely to blame and perhaps it is time to get rid of the felons, corrupt and incompetants within the leadership?

Entirely the responsibility of the electorate, and, the electorate is to be forgiven if it long ago concluded that local elections hardly matter. We live in a one party town. It's just like with CLP; we can't do anything about poor service, but at least we know with certainty who to blame.

  17. Peter...Both major parties mission is to spread the political gospel and to help bring out the vote of their respective parties.Toward that end they failed miserably. Please refrain from the 1 party town rhetoric that we have heard so often. The objective evidence is that the last elected Council Republican voted for every increse in spending and taxes as the Democrats. And Peter, you know the aforsaid to be a objective fact.In addition Peter, none of the Republican party leadership called for the removal of Perez when his political problems became public. If the Republicans were in power, they would be just as incompetant and corrupt.Your " 1 party town" refrain holds no water, based upon the proven objective record.

The electorate by not voting, is voting in a sense. They are giving us a message. It is up to all of us to accurately decipher what exactly the message of not voting is.

  18. It's the same old rhetoric, rehashed from arm chairs, by the same people. Sigh. Welcome to the People's Republic of the Socialist State of Hartford. Welcoming all to join the resistance! http://itsenoughto.blogspot.com/2011/11/day-zero-welcome-to-peoples-republic-of.html

  20. Michael,

you make some valid points, except I think you are either missing or ignoring the root cause. Although you say " There are no Republicans left anywhere in Hartford government.", whose fault is that?

The bottom line is that the WFP outworked and outspent the GOP and their candidates. That blame lies squarely with your Republican Town chairman and the fact that he has killed the Republican Party in Hartford.

I also agree that the WFP will not be good for Hartford's Council and budget over the next four years, but is not like they snuck up on anyone. I warned the Republican Town Committee in 2006 that if they underestimated the resources of the WFP that they were doing it at their own peril. I was laughed out of the meeting when I said that....oh well, what do I know.

The blame, as well as the change, needs to start at the top by bringing new energy and new ideas to a body of dinosaurs, a/k/a the HRTC.

  21. Maybe if Elaine actually lived in the district she claims to represent, she would have a better understanding of the issues. Kelvin Roldan might try the same thing unless he plans to have his ditrict changed to include West Hartford where he currently resides.

It was also good to see Marie Kirkley-Bey came back from her shoreline home in Old Saybrook to get out the vote in her former hometown of Hartford

  22. Bruce: Your logic is no better now that you claim it is wrapped in "objective" this and "objective" that - how cute you can be, but not very persuasive.

How do the actions of one rogue councilperson(Veronica), who rarely listened to her party anyway and is now effectively out of politics, have anything to do with the Hartford republican party's agenda and ideology today?

Do you really think you are fooling Jon Green with these posts?

No doubt there is a woeful decline in the dem and republican party structures in Hartford, and this certainly has had something to do with voter decline for several election cycles and the WFP's success, but brother Peter has a much more convincing argument that the electorate is more to blame, ultimately because it is the electorate that decides if it is going to stop complaining about things and get involved instead, in order to effect change.

Ever since your defeat in becoming the HDTC chair, it seems you have gotten quite bitter, and taken to complaining only. Maybe your entreaties to the WFP will bear fruit and result in seeing you more on the streets and less on the blogs?

  23. Kevin...Elaine has no time or money to live in her district as any spare money goes to campaigns like the money she knowingly gave to Felon Angel Morales. At her next town committee party Angel will be invited by Elaine to dance before them in his navy blue boxers... perhaps doing the "twist" before any of the town committees young boys.

  24. If the Republicans were in power, they would be just as incompetant and corrupt.

Would seem an acknowledgement, Bruce, that the Republicans are not, and have not been for many years, in power. But, also, if the parties are equally bad, I'm not clear on why you care if the electorate shows up to vote. Our electorate, I believe, shares your pessimistic, not to say cynical, evaluation of politicians and parties. All the same, its overwhelming preference for Democratic pols over the course of decades can't be an accident. It's the result of decades of Dem vote-buying with taxpayer money. Or, to put it differently, our electorate is profoundly committed to social justice.
