TOO MANY GUNS ON OUR STREETS, THE COURTS NEED TO START DOING THEIR JOB

There are too many guns on our streets. The alarming part is that many of these gun arrests come along with the criminal charge "criminal possession of a firearm". That charge usually means that this person  is a convicted felon willing to carry or use a gun. This can no longer be a "slap on the wrist offense" by the courts. This is a serious charge and it needs to result in serious jail time.

Here is an incident that occurred last night and the details from HPD:

On November 24, 2015 at 7:10pm Hartford Police Department Patrol Officers and the Hartford Shooting Task Force responded to New Country Motor Cars on Weston Street on a report of an active shooter. Arriving HPD officers tactically cleared the parking lot and dealership but were unable to locate the shooter. Officers located several witnesses who reported that a male suspect, dressed in black, had been shooting at an employee in the east lot of the dealership. The intended victim and witnesses reported up to five shots from a revolver. Two vehicles were damaged by gunfire.

As officers were still investigating at New Country Motor Cars, a McDonald's employee, (98 Weston Street) called 911 and reported a male suspect in the restaurant in possession of a firearm.

HPD Officers and Hartford STF responded. Officers entered McDonald's and observed a male suspect sitting with a revolver on his lap. The suspect was held at gunpoint by officers as he put his hands in the air. HPD Patrol Officers moved in and secured the suspects firearm (#1). The suspect was placed in handcuffs without incident. The suspect was identified as Willis Wright.

As Wright was in the rear seat of a HPD cruiser, he advised the Officer that he was the one that was just shooting at the Mercedes Dealership. Wright further stated that he had two guns, and had previously discarded the gun he used to shoot at the dealership. HPD Patrol and STF Investigators went to an area directed to by Wright where he said he threw a firearm. Officers went behind 10 Weston Street (formerly Jiffy Lube), where the firearm (#2) was located and secured as evidence.

Wright is a convicted felon with several pending cases and prior firearm arrests. He was interviewed and booked.

It is not immediately clear why the suspect was shooting at the dealership. Investigators report Wright had no connection to the dealership and that Wright believed '...somebody was trying to kill him'. Investigators described Wrights behavior as a Emotionally Disturbed Person. The Investigation is ongoing. Wright is to be arraigned this morning.

EVIDENCE:

Firearm #1; Colt .38 Caliber Detective Special Revolver color black, fully loaded with (6) live .38 caliber rounds of ammunition.

Firearm #2; Sturm Ruger .357 Revolver color silver, containing (5) spent shell casings.

DAMAGED:

New 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 SUV- passenger side roof projectile damage.

New 2016 Smart Fortwo coupe- passenger side door projectile damage.

Arrest: Wright, Willis, 38 (03/23/1977), of 1574 Main Street, Hartford, CT.
Charges:

Carrying a Pistol w/o a Permit

Criminal Possession of a Firearm

Criminal Attempt at Assault 1st Degree

Criminal Mischief 1st Degree

Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree

Kevin, I couldn't agree more. But we're plugging the dam with bubble gum. Bronin said "I'll get illegal guns off the street and hire more cops". Well, do you really not think we haven't been doing that all along? HPD makes gun arrests almost daily, courts slap them on the wrist or let them go, if they do get a little state time, Governor Malloy gives them an early release. If the Feds adopt the case, as they sometimes do, Obama gives them an early release. So the bottom line is, that's why they're are so many convicted felons back on the street possessing guns like its normal business. It's absolutely disgusting I tell you. I still without a doubt wish Bronin the best.

That is just dumb. There are so many guns on the street because generally speaking guns are easy to get both legally and illegally. If guns are harder to get then there will be less on the street. Putting evermore criminal in jail for longer does not help deter future crime. Statistic bear this out. Additionally, mass incarceration creates a whole swath of society that is prevented from productive members once they mature (older people commit less crime than those in their 20s).

So what are you saying 1:44PM?

You said "Putting evermore criminal in jail for longer does not help deter future crime. Statistic bear this out."

First, I'd like you to cite where you found your statistic pertaining to future crime.
I can guarantee that some one put in jail is NOT committing crimes against the general public.

Second, to LEGALLY own/carry a weapon is not an easy task.

Third, pertaining to "Mass Incarceration", people are, or should be, held responsible for their actions.

We all have choices. When too many wrong choices are made, then choices are made for you. IE: When to get up, & go to bed, when to shower, when to eat, etc.

If I had to eat at MacDonald's, especially on Washington Street, I would put a gun on my lap, too, just in case.

Anonymous said...

Obama gives them a early release?? You truly are an idiot !!

Anonymous said...

Agreed lol

3:34pm, while you get to see guns at McDonald's on Washington Street from time to time, the main merchandise sold at that
McDonald's is cocaine, heroin, vicodin and oxicodone. Lots of it.

Anonymous said...

@5:56

Who are you answering, yourself at 5:35 or 3:34?

Anonymous said...

Lets give 1:44 pm a break,,,i say we put his theory to the test,,, lock up "ALL" thugs right from their FIRST arrest and keep them in jail until they turn 30,,,,this way when released they wont have 15 or more arrests following them around the rest of their lives!!! This 1:44 pm is smarter than you think!!

Anonymous said...

And here's another idiot. Where do you think these decisions come from?

Washington st. McDonald is Hartford's headquarters for guns and drug, always been

@917

I only went in there once out of desperation - I was hungry on my way home. The counter was so confused, they gave me a double order of everything I asked for and didn't charge me for the extra. But I didn't find any dope inside but I'll bet a bag of dope comes with a side order of fries for a five spot.

You can find guns in every corner in Hartford, in and out of McDonald's, in and out of Burger Kings. From North End to South End, from East to West, guns are EVERYWHERE in Hartford.

Have you ever tried the white "pizza" at Broad Street & Russ? You get it in a small bsg, no cheese

HARTFORD IS DEFINITELY LOADED WITH GUNS, LOADED GUNS.

Happy Holidays to all the People of Hartford. Hopefully Pedro Maria Caviar is celebrating his last Thanksgiving Day and his last Christmas as mayor.

I just heard what sounded like bombs going off in Fairfield Ave part of Hartford.

Boom... boom... Right, someone celebrating Thanksgiving.

Boom... Boom...

... Celebrating Segarra out of office...

Anonymous said...

Everybody knows there are so many guns in Hartford, as 1:46PM called it Hartford Loaded With Loaded Guns.
Ask Segarra why there's no replacement to so many police officers who are leaving and retiring, many who already did. What exactly was Segarra thinking, or maybe he was just too busy with his first stadium and his other stadium.

Anonymous said...

Fact: It was city council, not Segarra. Ask them.

Anonymous said...

At 10:16 AM, It's an incompetent Segarra together with an incompetent city council. Ask anyone.
SEGARRA IS A HUGE FAILURE.

Is the new mayor sworn in on the 1st or 20th of January?

Anonymous said...

Kevin, it's not easy moving on, knowing that this corrupt mayor has more than a month left in office where he can continue damaging the interest of the city and its residents

Anonymous said...

I'm wonderingvif Segarra the big time loser going to participate in Bronin's inaugural ball in January 2016.

Anonymous said...

"3:31 And knowing that by accidentally dropping the soap and bending over to pick it up while taking a shower can become a life-altering experience.

Anonymous said...

I don't trust Segarra. That loser made sure he appointed people - his people - to many boards and commissions, all recently. What exactly is he trying to sabotage? I wouldn't trust Segarra for one minute.

Here's something not so new from channel 3 reported just a few hours ago:

"Hartford police are investigating two overnight shootings. Police tell Eyewitness News that the pair of shootings have left two people injured."

Obviously this's no news, this is Hartford almost every single day.

It's business as usual for Pedro Caviar Segarra. Remember how he jumped on every shooting during elections season? Elections season is now over, Segarra is nowhere to be found. Maybe he was busy partying last night. Or just enjoying some good caviar paid for by US.

11/27/15@3:32PM- Luke Bronin will be sworn in as the new mayor on 01-01-2016.

2 more shootings in Hartford last night. As Kevin's title says: "TOO MANY GUNS ON OUR STREETS."

Anonymous said...

Your racism is so strong an filled with hatred that your grammar is all screwed up are you a hill Billy??

Anonymous said...

Would it be inappropriate to turn First Night into a party for the Last Night of Mayor Maria Caviar? Having perhaps fireworks going off spelling
"Goodby, Mayor Caviar"

Anonymous said...

3:52 PM: Fireworks spelling "Good Riddance, Maria Segarra" will look better

Anonymous said...

Segarra doesn't function as a mayor, he hasn't functioned as mayor for 5 1/2 years. Don't expect him to be a "mayor" in his last 30 days.

Anonymous said...

Shooting in Hartford yesterday. Shooting in Hartford today. Shooting in Hartford almost every day. Where is Segarra? Is he still a mayor or he just occupies an office for the salary and benefits?

Anonymous said...

@9:17

To be candid, most elected officials do the same. If they need publicity to get re-elected, they will kiss babies or anyone's ' unwiped behinds for a cheap vote. I vaguely remember as a child, my parents talking about Ann Ucello rushing to a house fire while the cameras were rolling. They all do it. Maria Caviar is just one in a long line of reptiles masquerading as honorable political leaders, running to the fire. And when the bell tolls and no further elections are anticipated, no need to go to the fire. No need to consul with families whose members were gunned down. No need to do anything but show their true self, which is essentially a bankrupt soul.

Yes, this is the Tim of the year when those leaving office begin counting how much of a pension has accrued. And reviving a private practice that was never much developed in the first place.

Anonymous said...

I agree 100% with Anonymous at 8:25 AM, but wondering why is Maria Caviar so busy at his office next to the shredder machine/s. That's what I'm hearing around.

25 more days with this ceremonial mayor.
25 more days to this dysfunctional administration.

KEVIN BROOKMAN said...

25 days on the books but we will be suffering through the incompetence of the Segarra administration for years or even decades

Is the rumor true of federal agents at city hall? Heard there going to investigate HFD as well.

KEVIN BROOKMAN said...

Anonymous 7:57am,

It is not a rumor. There are definitely Federal Agents investigating City Hall. Definitely in relation to the Dillon Stadium Grand Jury and there may be something going on with HFD. It seems odd that the State investigation into the Bell death is taking so long, there might be other reasons for that delay including a Federal inquiry. As in most Federal Investigations, things are kept pretty quiet until they start taking action with arrests or calling witnesses to a grand jury. Keep your eyes and ears open and let me know if you hear anything.

Anonymous said...

My eyes and ears are wide open. This guy calling himself "mayor" should have been indicted - together with Sandy KB - long time ago.

10:17 PM, AT THIS TIME 24 DAYS REMAIN, LESS THAN 600 HOURS. HIS MISERABLE PILITICAL CAREER IS COMING TO AN END. FINALLY. WE'RE ALL COUNTING.

Anonymous said...

A few hours ago: murder no. 30 in Hartford so far this year. City of violence, City infested with crime.
Where are all the jobs Segarra promised us 5 years ago, and I'm not talking about the high paying job he secured for himself and which will finally expire on Dec. 31.

Anonymous said...

Murder #31 in Hartford this afternoon. SEGARRA AND HIS CITY COUNCIL ARE RESPONSIBLE!

Anonymous said...

I agree with you. Segarra bears a lot of the responsibility for the crime in Hartford. He wasted his time and spent OUR hard earned money on ridiculous shit like Dunkin Donuts Stadium and Dillon 'Whatever' Stadium, instead of concentrating and improving the safety in OUR city. Whenever there was a crisis or a problem, Segarra turned away from it and tried to "invent" something new.

Segarra is no leader. He never was.
Segarra is an idiot. He always was.

Anonymous said...

at 1:13 pm, Segarra, also known as Pedro and Peter, also known as Maria, also known as Pedro Caviar, also known as any combination of the above names is nothing but a failure, stinky failure. As one early commentator in this blog called him a mayor by title only.

Anonymous said...

If Segarra/Pedro/Caviar whatever is "mayor by title only" as you stated, how is it possible that he brings home $150k and more every year for his "title only" job

Anonymous said...

YO PEDRO, 2 MORE WEEKS IN OFFICE. GRACIAS A DIOS. I AM COUNTING THE DAYS FOR YOU.

Anonymous said...

Also, it is not the job of government to find jobs for its residents. That chore falls to private industry. A mayor can create an environment that hopefully will inspire industry to grow. But it is one big fat mistake to think that it is the responsibility of government to hire people. Not over my dead, tax-paying body.

Anonymous said...

Not over NY dead, tax-paying body as well. However, Segarra created an environment of waste, inefficiencies, high-high taxes, not to forget a crime infested city.
No business, no investor would like to be in such environment.

Anonymous said...

@11:06AM, above all, Segarra created an atmosphere of corruption together with his closest allies SKB, Minnie Mouse and Vargas. Giving away jobs to Edwin Vargas niece LaLuz, Minnie Mouse Gonzalez' daughter Maldonado, securing top job to Saundra's boy Terry Waller, hiring a "scheduler" and so on.
An anti-business environment, an atmosphere of corruption.

Anonymous said...

Enough already with Segarra, he's politically finished. It's now a matter of hours til Segarra is gone. Just a little over 300 hours to be exact.

Anonymous said...

PEDRO SEGARRA IS DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO THE INCREASE IN CRIME AND MURDERS IN HARTFORD. HE ALLOWED THE POLICE FORCE TO SHRINK BY A LARGE NUMBER OF EXPERIENCED, VETERAN POLICE OFFICERS BECAUSE OF INJURIES AND RETIREMENT WITHOUT ANY REPLACEMENT.
WHO WANTS TO LIVE IN A CITY LIKE THIS. SHAME ON SEGARRA. GOOD RIDDANCE TO US ALL.
