IT MUST BE A HUUUGE SALE AT K-MART

No, it is not an unannounced blue light special at K-Mart ( am I really showing my age by saying that or even  knowing what it means?)

I have received several calls tonight asking if I knew why blue lights were flashing at intersections around Hartford. Apparently not too many people follow the Bronin dog and pony shows or they might have known the answer.

Blue strobe lights have been installed around the City to flash brightly when a parking ban has been issued by the City for a snowstorm and to warn residents.

Clearly with the number of phone calls I received tonight, they do draw attention , but what good are they if no one know why they are there ?

The "blue light" plan was apparently copied from New Haven and not K-Mart, but maybe we should have copied the entire plan from New Haven DPW, including the appropriate signage to let people know what the lights are for. It just seem t make sense

From the City:A parking ban will be in place for the City of Hartford beginning at 8 p.m. today. All on-street parking is prohibited throughout the City of Hartford beginning at 8 p.m. today February 8, and ending at 8 a.m. Friday, February 10th. All Hartford District Public Schools parking lots will be available for use. However, cars must be moved from the lots by 11 a.m. Friday. For more information, visit www.hartford.gov/snow-parking. Parking is also available at city parks, recreation and senior centers and the new "Blue Light Lots".

I was wondering about that myself. Thanks for the heads up, Kevin.

They are too bright.....and strobes are like 1980 era. Looks like minimal research was done.

Bronin must have run out of money to pay for the signs or communication plan around the new lights. Must have been his own blue light special. Why should he do things properly when you get away with half ass on a regular basis?

In true government fashion, the signs will be coming out in August. Probably in several languages. At this point, we may need to rent $20,000 per month billboards.

$70,000 to install some 14 antiquated lights. And they want to add many more around the city by years end. The catch is someone from DPW drives around to each light to turn them on and off by a switch.

But hey atleast we have $47 million dollars coming to save the city thanks to Bronin's BFF.

@11:23, Sounds typical of Hartford's running lean mentality. The oversight board can't come soon enough as you can't make this shit up!

When I was a patrol officer in the city during parking bans I would yelp my siren and get on the P.A. system and announce to my neighborhood. There is currently an active parking ban in affect, save yourself some money and locate your vehicles to a local school. I can say this much the city made no money in my patrol area and I was always greeted with thank yous and smiles

You told them to locate their vehicles or to relocate their vehicles to a local school? I do hope you write a better police case report......I'm sure you'd receive many thank yous.

The funny thing is, people in his neighborhood understood him, stupid understands stupid!

I drove down Albany avenue and stopped at the intersection of High street. Waiting for the light to change I was greeted by a bright white strobe light over head. No signage just a strobe light. So I wondered, who is the idiot that came up with that idea? If somebody goes into a seizure because of this strobe light at an intersection near the school who is going to eat that mess?? Apparently the blue cover was missing or had blown off in the snow storm. Blue cover or not its still a strobe. Bad idea.
