AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN

HPD OFFICER JAMES BARRETT

An officer, a Police Officer actually, a gentleman and a great human being. That is the best way to describe Hartford Police Officer Jim Barrett.

Jim Barrett is a Hartford Police Officer assigned to the area around the Hartford Public Library and City Hall on Main Street. On Monday Barrett was at his assigned area on bike patrol. Barrett heard a radio call for a potentially suicidal male who was threatening to take his life by jumping from a bridge near the riverfront.

With a limited description of the mans clothing, Barrett rode toward the area of Riverfront Plaza. He observed a man matching the description climbing over the rail of the pedestrian bridge over Columbus Boulevard near the Science Center. Barrett reacted quickly and was able to grab the man before he was actually able to jump from the bridge. A short struggle ensued and Officer Barrett, with the assistance of a couple bystanders , was able to restrain the man until medical help arrived.

For anyone that doesn't know Jimmy Barrett, this selfless act was not an anomaly, it is one type of act helping people that he conducts everyday to different degrees.

Barrett is not just a Community Service Officer  for City Hall, he fills a void  by helping people that are down on their luck or just need a little help getting by.

Barrett regularly organizes collections, and distributes footwear , shoes, socks, etc. for the homeless. His City Hall Office some days looks more like the shoe aisle at Walmart than a Police Office. His winter drive also usually has health care professionals available to address foot issues with the people that come in for help.

Officer Barrett is the original "Re-entry Center" at City hall , often helping recently released from incarceration members of the community or others trying to obtain employment with clothing, footwear or even coaching or setting up job interviews. Many times people stop by Officer Barrett's office looking for a snack or something to eat.  Barrett always has snack, energy bars or even canned items like spaghetti-o's that can be eaten on the go

Barrett really understands and takes his oath literally, to serve and protect.

As of the last check, the man threatening to jump was receiving medical attention.

Barrett has also served as a member of the US Army and has been deployed  over seas on several occasions.

If anyone would like to assist Officer Jim Barrett in his efforts, donations are always welcomed and accepted. Officer Barrett's office is located on the ground level of City Hall at the rear doors.

Great job Officer Barrett.

  1. Too bad Oficer Barret won't get to see your great post about him and positive things about HPD. All HPD Officers have been ordered not to read your blog by members of the Command Staff, Chief Thody included.

Maybe if they paid more attention to addressing the problems you point out instead of their feeble attempts to tear you down, things might actually changer here.

I am pretty sure every time they mention you negatively, your numbers increase.

Keep it up, we appreciate you even if the 2nd floor doesn't

  2. Don’t worry. Jimmy Barrett is a believer in the Fallonite cause... it is still well and alive. Neville Brooks, the silent majority wants you. You are like our Donald Trump and Thody is the phony Hillary Clinton. You will all see how this plays out..... keep screwing over the workers and the good guys.

  6. Everyone is so concerned about morale. Simple.... recognize good work. Start handing out the 100 awards we have completed and ready for issue. Ceremony was supposed to be Oct 25. Stop making this about politics and make this about police work. Shame on city hall, shame on the chief’s complex. Everyone blames Bowsza and Thody for BS crap on here. This is a legit reason - we are the police. Cops saving lives, while risking theirs should be rewarded in a timely fashion. Stand up for us and our families Thody - that’s your job.

    1. Thody and Bowsza have created a new award ribbon ready for immediate issue.......longest time serving....behind a desk.
It will be issued in both a uniform medal and a desktop plaque, to prominently display where they've spent most of their career.
Thody/Bowsza are proudly the first recipients.

By the way, where did they hide all the new Tahoe’s? Did all those explorers Thody promised come in yet? We’re only going on 3+ years.

  7. I was in the roll call when a Lieutenant made a legit open threat against a citizen who may or may not run this blog. How is that acceptable? If I did that with my silver badge, I’d face severe discipline up to possibly termination. What’s with this double standard? And Medina aligns himself with this guy? Time to find some new friends Mr. A/C

    1. What makes you think Medina aligns himself with “this guy?” “This guy” is a complete disgrace to the badge.

Say what you want about Christene Mertes, but said she was unfairly skipped and disciplined. Thody and Medina wanted "their boys" to get promoted and Medina ordered Buyak to find her guilty before any sort of investigation or policy review was conducted (FOIs those e-mails Kevin).

Now Thody and Medina are blaming the Union President for telling her to introduce the facebook posts of other members who were also in violation of the policy. So instead of saying, "You're right Christine, our policy is vague and we should not have skipped you, here is your promotion", they're saying, "You're Union President made her do this, now we have to act", and with that, they served 10 interrogatories.

So why did they wait until Jay Szepanski's facebook post to "act"?

Say what you want about Paul West, but he said Vinny Benvenuto and Rafael Medina were racist. He even filed a CHRO against Vinnie Benvenuto and Rafael Medina for being racist and discriminating against him. Now Kevin, you might not believe Paul West, but do you believe he is capable of saying totally unacceptable things? Yes, he is. And Kevin, can you deny that he and Medina have been breakfast buddies and have often used their coffee (cup after cup after cup) time to make personnel decisions? They have. And now that Vinnie has threatened to cut your throat and made racially insensitive comments towards a Omar Jones, an African American officer, do you think it's possible that "Anonymous said: What makes you think Medina aligns himself with “this guy?” “This guy” is a complete disgrace to the badge. October 21, 2019 at 12:50 PM" could be Medina? Probably is.

So, you may not like Mertes and West, but to some degree, you'd have to say they're are vindicated?

West's CHRO will get a boost now. Merte's CHRO, civil lawsuit will get a boost now.

One female, one african american lieutenant. Maybe the Union president was right. Maybe HPD is not safe for women and african americans. Its 2019 and this is what we are talking about at Hartford Police. Unbelievable. Please share this Gannon Long and Hartford Police Not Safe for Women. Maybe they can expand their title to Hartford Police Not Safe for anyone but White Men. Please share this with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and The Men of Color.

Where are the Tahoes? Maybe the Westfield State University researchers can figure out where the tahoes are and why women and african americans are treated unfairly.

  9. The big questions this week ..

1-Does Chief Thody prove he is the right person to lead the department and order an immediate investigation into these allegations?

2-Does a white Lt have the free pass to make hostile remarks to a minority employee ?

3-Does AC Madena chew the fat at breakfast 🍳 with vinni?

I most certainly did not make a racist comment. I believe I am the best man for the job, sorry my mouth can be loud at times. Chief Medina and I have been friends forever. It’s not based on Merit. I gave him a break with a speeding ticket on the GW bridge one day and he never forgot that from my days on Highway 2. Now he is just repaying the favor. Please leave me be. Guzzie really does have a brain issue though and Omar needs to go back to high school. I am just trying to make sure Morande stays hated cause he is too smart

  11. The inner circle ⭕️ is crumbling day by day. Soon Bronin will 🙅🏻‍♂️ Thody. Medina will be working at Aetna 💸 and Bowsza 🌮 will have nowhere to hide.

For how I may, or wish I might, Vinni will be my demise. And it will be no surprise, when my two stars turn back into LT bars. And will Brookman find the cars? No, they’re not up to par. This place Makes me feel lower than tar, cause I thought I would be Hartford’s rising star❇️

  14. Years ago HFD combined a retirement party and award ceremony ,, I was there for one reason only,,,after congratulating retirees it came time for awards ,,,,I knew in advance I was on the list ,,, you know where I was when they announced my name? in the parking lot enjoying cigars with a few like minded firefighters who also would have been embarrassed to receive recognition for doing their job. The outstanding pay, benefits and occasional pat on the back from a respected co-worker was good enough for me .

  16. Just wait Mr Westfield State..... if Mertes was the hypothetical Hindenburg, the spark has been lit! The flames of her career crashing as the inferno of her evil ways consume her will honestly burn bright all the way from Hartford to Lakehurst like they did on that fateful day on May 6th 1937. Her evil maniacal targeting of a sergeant due to her rebuffed sexual advances, will be dealt with first by the city, and then by private attorney. Mertes will be such a shining, fiery example of what NOT to do it will have folks screaming “Oh the humanity!”

  17. Vinny says nothing will happen to him and that you are a liar Kevin. Do us all a favor and file a formal complaint against him please for the best of all of patrol. You should have heard him screaming on the radio yesterday causing a safety issue as usual, take a breathe already

The reason nothing is happening to Vinnie is because that is the way I chose to handle it. When I first made the command staff aware of it they asked if I wanted to make a complaint. My request was that it be handled internally , and if he lied or was a jerk about what he said I would go further with a complaint to IAD and City Hall. Apparently the liar is Vinnie because he originally denied the incident and then I guess reconsidered and said he was having a bad day and apparently he did make a comment that he was going to slit my throat and shut down the blog. As a sidenote, several decent Officers did advise me what was said and at least one Officer has a recording from what IK understand. Anyone who knows Vinnie knows he is a bully and a blowhard. I doubt I have to worry about him actually slitting my throat, but I guess it would be pretty easy to figure out the main suspect if that happened. In the meantime, if the Lieutenant persists, I will have no problem filing a criminal complaint and ask that it be investigated for threatening. In the meantime , I gave my word to the command staff that if it was handled and the Lieutenant stopped this nonsense, that would be the end of it, I will stand by my word and let it end there, unless the LT acts differently. Time will tell
