I'm not sure when Hartford City Hall is going to start paying attention to the disaster that the Hartford Police Department Administration has become.
At the risk of beating a dead horse, the number of officers jumping ship to get away from the floundering department should be alarming. All recruitment efforts have pretty much been in vain as the numbers of good officers, including minority and female officers have become the feeder system for just about every other Department in the state. And to be quite honest, what Police Chief would not gladly hire a Hartford Police officer (in good standing)in a heartbeat. With all due respect to Police Officers statewide ,Hartford Police Officers experience more in their first year on the job than most others in smaller departments may see in their entire careers.
But sadly, most officers are not bailing from HPD because of lower pay or benefits. The reason I keep being told is the lack of leadership and feeling unappreciated ,has forced officers to start looking elsewhere.
I would almost say, it is not a lack of leadership...there is no leadership'
For the Memorial Day Weekend, staffing levels were so bad, officers were ordered in and days off were canceled. For the good of the Department and the safety of the City, I could understand that move. Even though I think it is the height of incompetence to let staffing levels get that low and no one is concerned.
But then, after ordering officer's in and telling them that days off are cancelled., their Chief takes off and heads to Florida. Now there's a morale builder move
And the "not-in-command" staff were so concerned about the City, they weren't paying attention to the violence or distributing data to their officers or sharing data with Community partners to stem the violence. No the HPD brain trust was more concerned firing off e-mails trying to figure out who would be manning the grill for hot dogs and hamburgers on Memorial Day. That sounds like a Lieutenants position that is wasted money.
Jason Thody is and has been the furthest thing from being the poster child for "leadership by example". Instead he should be writing the book "how not to act as a Police Chief" or maybe "Being a Police Chief for Dummies"
For Thody to leave the City as Homicides are spiking and typically one of the busiest events, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, is taking place is unbelievable. And then for his not in "Command Staff" to have to issue a Mayday call begging for help is amazing and shows the condition HPD is in.
We can only hope that Thody's trip to Florida was a one-way ticket.
Its time to shine the "Batman beacon" over the City of Hartford and get a real Chief that can lead.

Commander and Chief sun bathes hydrating with Bud Lights in Florida while the peasants take rocks and bottles with no operational plan whatsoever. Incompetence at it’s best. He never was a leader, and never will be. And he doesn’t even try, complete failure.

Jason is a train wreck! Why else do you think Daigle ended his friendship with him? Daigle has a lot to prove and must stay professional at all times, he was getting close with Jason and saw the side of him that EVERYONE talks about now.
Hartford is the laughingstock of CT and is always the talk of the room. How Jason makes everyone look bad and is giving every other department a bad name.
Hartford Officers have always been overworked and underpaid, so there’s nothing new going on currently with that. The reason for everyone leaving is plain and simple. Jason and his “crew” have destroyed the police department. Now you have detectives and lieutenants leaving to start over somewhere else.
Hartford will NEVER recover from Jason and Company. Mark my words!

It might be time to promote from within and possibly from the rank of Sergeant or Lieutenant. A sergeant or Lt. would have the best grasp of what is needed to fix the place.
Get rid of the entire upper administration as they are useless and so divisive that they are of zero benefit to the rank and file, patrol, the backbone of the department. Not much good to say about either Assistant Chief, both are vine climbers and have zero Hartford experience. That actually matters. Knowing the Community is the most important aspect of having a successful department.
IT is time for City Government to draw the line in the sand. The entire north end smells like marijuana. Not too good for anyone wanting to start a business in that part of the city, Now that marijuana is legal the whole city will smell a joint or bong. Great!
Support the officers and let them make the city safe because right ow it isn’t. And with the leadership all compromised by past misdeeds or current displays of poor ship is sinking.
The only thing that’s gone down since Thody's arrival is the Morale. Everything else is WAY up.
All the small towns in CT thank you for all the great officers. The numbers will hit 100 in the next few months.

No one from the chief's complex showed up to court to show support for an officer stabbed in the neck in the line of duty. That pretty much says it all...

Police work is a tough business. It can get physical and while use of force always looks terrible
force needs to be used at times. Physical deterrent. The fear a criminal feels of possible
repercussions of their criminal actions. Why do you think the streets are out of control?
Criminals have no fear. Police officers can use force when justified. It’s part of the job. Drug dealers,
gang members, violent felons would think twice about committing such acts if they knew for sure that a physical
deterrent would follow. Keeps bashing police and when Hartford is down hundreds of cops and all
taxpayers leave build a fence and sell tickets.
As for the Chief he will make decisions based on disciplinary matters after seeing investigative
results of the issue.

Chris, you are right, most cops are righteous and well meaning. And those who are not, not only dishonor the profession, but are never fired because of the arbitration and union protections. Those who should not be officers are sent back to their job posts to ruin it for everyone else. This is why we now have such citizen disgust for law enforcement. The bad cops remain on duty. Don’t you get it? Doesn’t anyone else get it?
Really? Your completely wrong when it comes to HPD. Stackowitz, Barone and Guzie are a few examples for you. There’s not one Hartford cop that did something so wrong that wasn’t terminated and sent back to their post. And here’s some inside information for you. The HPD Union sucks and hasn’t saved anyone’s job. More often than not, guys terminated should’ve never been terminated to begin with. You have no clue what your talking about.

Really!? All three cops you mentioned only got fired because it was caught on video. If those incidents weren’t caught on video they would’ve been promoted and put in place to mess with the good cops. And I agree with you, the union does suck and needs to be changed to FOP. Make that move and things will slowly start to get better.

and here I am a now former Police Officer who was fired a year ago during the beginning of the COVID pandemic. I had COVID, was covered by my doctor and for not having sick time got fired. Well they say "medically separated" not even sure what other term they have added. Heard others were given workers comp pay while out on COVID and I was fired. They must hate me so much and just need bodies so desperately that they offer me my job back without benefits or backpay. How do they treat a veteran of 17 years like this who wasn't even fired for any criminal behavior. I want to work, they should just shut up, pay me what they owe and give me the job back and ill take all marching orders like their best drummer. Kevin I am available for my story.
