MAYBE WE DO NEED AN "ANTI-RACISM" ORDINANCE

Pictured above: State Representative Minnie Gonzalez, on right in striped shirt, being threatened with arrest as she yells at Sean Arena to "stay the f**k out of Puerto Rican politics" Tuesday night at City Hall

I have been getting a lot of comments from people who have been wondering what Councilman Luis Cotto was thinking when he referred to "lily white people". Maybe it is time to remind people that racism is not a one-way street.

I have read the comments posted here about "Puerto Rican politics" and wondered who would use such terms. Do we also have special ways to deal with Black or white politics? Is it proper for lawmakers to design or gear laws to benefit only one group? Is there really such a thing as "Puerto Rican politics"?

Well, after witnessing the behavior of State Representative Minnie Gonzalez at Tuesday nights Council meeting, I have confirmed there apparently is such a thing. Gonzalez was yelling quite loudly at former Democratic Town Committee Chair Sean Arena outside the Council Chambers. The shouting attracted quite a bit of attention and at one point Gonzalez was swinging her arms at Arena and yelling at him to "stay the f**k out of Puerto Rican politics".

A Hartford Police officer assigned to City Hall stepped in and told Gonzalez that she would be arrested if she didn't stop her behavior. The altercation was pretty intense and the picture above was taken as the officer stepped in.

This divisive politics is childish and racist at the very least. Should Hartford voters vote only for for candidates by race and if we do that are we being properly served by the system? As long as nothing is said about the statements "lily white" and "stay the f**k out of Puerto Rican politics", we are condoning racism and allowing it to divide us as a community.

We need to look for, elect and support political leaders who can look at their constituents as "color blind" and serve each and everyone of their constituents as equals. Until we can do that, Hartford will be stuck with political leaders that belong in the deep south of the 1960's, not a multicultural community like Hartford in the year 2010.

It is one thing to represent a heavily Hispanic area or District, but to advocate for a single group when you are elected to represent all is wrong and offensive. If politicians can't learn to be "color blind" then maybe it is time to show them the door and elect people that treat everyone as equal.

oy mi madre !!!! minnie has long been an embarassment to puerto ricans everywhere. I remember that Minnie was on welfare and the then city case worker for her ( ramon arroyo) who was then married....entered into a "relationship" with Minnie.

Minnie has a dirty filthy mouth and every decent puerto rican shies away from her and her thuggish ways.

Minnie and ramon operate a "office" for political work in their home on Amity street and that part of the mortgage and utility bills are paid by donations to their personal PAC...isnt that disgusting ?

Minnie's husband Ramon Arroyo was a paid pendejo of Senator Fonfara in 2008 and was paid about 4k as a "consultant" and we shall shortly see what he was paid in 2010.Which means that Minnie and Ramon, for all their puerto rican nationalism, are owned by a "gringo"

Ms Gonzalez is now the subject of an investigation in 2 state agencies and I believe within a year will be arrested and sooner or later she will be gone..and good riddance.

Minnie Gonzalez represents everything that is wrong with politics. Her and her husband profit quite well off the system , even going so far as paying their utility bills through her PAC. She benefits very well off the back of her constituents, just wait to see when the campaign filings are submitted and see how Minnie, Ramon and her kids make off the other campaigns as "consultants".

She is a fraud and her day is coming soon. Hopefully someone with integrity will challenge her next re-election time and end her time as a political leech

That is a great picture, Minnie's arms flailing, the cop pushing her back looks like he is yelling at her and John Bazzano caught in the middle.

What's up with Minnie's dye job? could she only afford to have half her head done. Maybe she is still waiting for Fonfara and Roldan and Robles to pay her.

Her head looks like a skunk, but I guess that is fitting, everything she does stinks

Perhaps our municipal governors could generate some revenue by making their proceedings into a "reality" tv show. I'd watch. I bet Senator McMahon would be happy to join with Lieberman in an earmark to study the matter.

Amen.
But, around here, not only is that not reality, it isn't even an objective. Our guys are content to treat the town as a third world district supported from outside. Our local pols and their constituents then operate on the spoils system.

-----------------------------------The Contract Compliance Unit monitors the following requirements and/or goals.

A. Minority/Women Business Enterprise (M/WBE) Participation Requirement
Prime contractors are required to set-aside a portion of work as specified in the contract for M/WBEs. The City of Hartford has established a minimum requirement of 15% with an overall goal of 50% M/WBE utilization. Prime contractors must submit on a monthly basis the Monthly Minority/Women Business Enterprise Payment Status Report for review to determine compliance.

Mr Brush...im sorry but we need first to find candidates who will fit right into the political system...they must need to be criminals, corrupt or ethically and morally bankrupt first..and then we will worry about whether they pursue a nanny state agenda

Cosign both Kevin and Peter.
It is another major reason why so many people continue to vote with feet by leaving the city for better pastures.
It seems to me that Hartford has a political plantation with a heavy dose of community power brokers, obstructionists, crooks, opportunists and race baiting fools at every turn.
