A BUSY WEEKEND FOR THE HARTFORD FIRE DEPARTMENT

As a result of the severe weather that Hartford had to deal with over the past weekend, fires and EMS calls played in small role in HFD's emergency responses.

HFD responded to over 253 emergency calls, many of them weather related.

On February 15th, HFD responded to 98 emergency calls and on February 16th they responded to 155 calls for service. The total HFD responses for the period was 376 weather /cold weather related calls.

According to HFD Chief Reginald Freeman, on several occasions he heard radio conversations that the dispatcher stated that resources were down to "zero" due to the numerous simultaneous calls. Despite that workload, Freeman stated that the District Chiefs and the company officers and all personnel working handled the task with "poise and professionalism", rising to the task of meeting the emergency needs of the people of Hartford.

Freeman also stated that at the direction of Mayor Bronin, the City, HFD as well as few faith based organizations partnered together to ensure the safety of Hartford's people and make sure they had a safe place to keep warm during the sub zero temperatures. In addition to the City and HFD, the Asylum Hill Congregational Church and the Hartford Rescue Mission graciously opened their doors for approximately 120 residents. Both organizations also provided hot meals during that period.

Both organizations were given the "Chief's Award of Excellence" for their efforts this week  by Chief Freeman and presented by Councilman Jimmie Sanchez, The City Council's Public Safety Chair.

I received a call yesterday from a business person who experienced frozen pipes bursting in his building overnight Sunday. He was impressed by the efforts of HFD to what he called their "efforts above and beyond" to assist his cleanup efforts and removing the water from his business .

We were no busier than we have ever been during a major storm. The only difference is that you all of a sudden want to make us look good for Bronin. Do you really think that anyone cares about this post. Neither you nor the City has ever supported us, so don't bother starting now.

No, get it right. I never supported your "leadership", or should I say lack of leadership. And I don't need to maker anyone "look good" for the Mayor . He hears from a lot more people than me, and I am pretty sure he is capable of making up his own mind. You must have had a few days off if you didn't realize how busy HFD was during this cold spell. I have always supported HFD, HPD and even DPW but I do know the difference between a good effort and a bad effort, and I am not afraid to say whichever way it is

Like 1:00PM said, those aren't unusual storm days! We have been doing more with less forever. We couldn't get any support from the city and still did what needed to done. But now we have the smartest leader in America and he needs more protection than anyone else to ever hold the position. Most of us don't care about him Costello or Hudson because we know they don't really care about us as a whole, just who fits their personal agendas. Look at the moves they've made with FMO and Training. They let people out of the 2 divisions under the most scrutiny for underperforming. Great job!

Bunch of whiners. If things are so bad, move on and open up a spot for someone that has a better attitude and knows what pride in their work means. We don't need your negative attitudes.

You guys can not even accept positive praise without acting like a bunch of spoiled a**holes. grow up and stop acting like high school kids. You have a new Chief making changes, now deal with it. Until you are appointed Chief, someone has to be in charge

Funny I never saw any positive posts about Hartford Fire Dept on here when Seggara was mayor an Huertas or Teale was chief!!!

Tell me what they did that was positive? Fire hose that hadn't been tested since 2013,face masks that weren't tested in years because the machine was broken and never repaired (until a firefighter died and the City was fined for it) apparatus lighting that hasn't worked for years, the first line of duty death in decades, media attention to the DUI's, shootings, drug use and lets not forget Terry Waller. Are those the positives you mention? Chief Freeman has done more to address these issues in three weeks than Segarra and Huertas did in years. And yes, I am impressed with Chief Freeman and his actions so far, so prepare yourself to keep reading about it here as long as it continues, even if that doesn't fit with your agenda to discredit HFD and its leadership

6:42am sounds like Vinny posting, realizing his days as the surrogate Chief are done. The real Chief is now going to run the Department without the Union interference. And Kevin, all of those things you mentioned are true, but where was the Union fighting to get things done, instead ignoring the testing and maintenance that endangered fire fighters lives, but Vinny was still getting the perks he wanted for himself and his protected clique. Funny how he didn't mention Casares in his rant, just Teale and Huertas. Keep the change coming Reggie.

Forget all that bullshit,,,,,,,,,,,I hope all those fine people who provided shelter, food, warmth and comfort to those in need get recognized. The time spent there was time these "un-named" heroes sacrificed for themselves and family. I hope I put things in perspective!!!!! To all you posting "hate",,,,WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU TRULY SACRIFICED AND HELPED OTHERS FROM YOUR HEART,WITHOUT IT AFFECTING YOUR WALLET OR POLITICAL AGENDA?????? WHA T A BUNCH OF "POSERS"

Kevin, I thought you said Chief Freeman was trying to fix the things that have gone wrong in the HFD. If that is so why would he place a clown like Hudson as interim Assistant Chief? Hudson and people like him is the reason why the Fire Department became so dysfunctional to begin with. Freeman might have as well brought back Waller, Dobson or Billy Smith all useless pieces of sh*t. I once had hope for Chief Freeman to do the right thing but now question his motives.
