On Mondays, "WE THE PEOPLE " program we will be talking Chapter 9 and Hartford's possible bankruptcy filing with retired Probate Judge Bob Killian. Get past the hype and the bad information, hear why it may make sense and what it really means. Bob Killian is very knowledgeable on Hartford's history, what got us to this point and how do we try to fix it and what structural changes he may feel need to be made to get us back on a sustainable financial path..
It should be a very interesting and educational hour and it will be posted on youtube afterwards.
For those in Hartford, you can watch live on Hartford Public Access, Channel 5 at 1:00PM

Killian should have been mayor. Bronin sucks. Killian is a logical leader. Bronin sucks killian would not support library employees making 160 k a year . The board of ed fat need to make more cash according to bronin.
Would Judge Killian sign the chapter nine status for Little Luke?
"Little Luke" would have to grow a set and decide to do what is best for the City and not worry about his political future first.
Just wanted to let everyone know
if little Luke succeeds with filing bankruptcy,
all of retiree pensions are up for reduction.
Everyone needs to call legislatures and Malloy .
Hartford would be first capitol city ever to file Outrageous!!!
Brookman you dont care, you have no city pension.
there always has to be first for everything. unfortunately we may be the first capitol city to file, but if you are so opposed, what is your solution or alternative? and you are correct, I do not have any investment or stake in the pension fund, but if I did, I would want to be sure that it was safe when I did decide to retire and the only way to assure that is to get Hartford back on a stable footing, which it is not currently
Hartford is unsustainable, because half of Hartford's landscape is tax-exempt, due to state and federal buildings, hospitals, colleges, etc. which support the entire state. It is suppose to be reimbursed by the state, under the pilot program, in lieu of taxes for these properties, but the program is underfunded. Lawmakers should fund it to statutory levels which would make Hartford sustainable. Also, the state should revitalize Hartford as New York City did. Police and firemen put their lifes on the line, and should be protected at all cost. Hartford Police and Firemen go through rigorous entrance training and examinations to be on the job. Over the years, Hartford Police and Firemen have accepted no wage increases, in exchange for the promise of these pensions. Sounds a little like fraud, if these pensions weren't fully funded. Also, federal gov. extempted police and firemen from social security , but failed to exempt them from municipalities filing bankruptcies. The state has bailed out other cities and towns to avoid bankrupcy, why not our Capitol city?

Remember all the churches, churches and even more churches that don't pay and don't contribute even one single penny in real estate tax.
How many properties claim religious status? What are the procedures in place ? Does hartford bother to verify religious status? I only ask because the city is broke. So there is no way 59 percent are actually churches or government. Has an audit even been completed on tax exempt issues
6:39am and 5:11pm / not only hospitals and churches, why doesn't MDC pay any real estate taxes? We know MDC is a "nonprofit" but heck, MDC should pay Hartford something
According to the Courant,Hartford council has fired Centerplan and DoNo due, both were hired for the Dublin Donuts stadium project and surrounding construction. They failed to meet
Deadlines and other reasons. Daryll Hill had responsibility for this project, why not also fire Daryll Hill?
No accountability in management! Hartford!
And we used to pay the sewer bill for hartford hospital in years past. In sure they will cry broke like uconn health. The city is pretty sad these days. Guns n roses should end the reign of the worst venue i have ever been to. The civic center. I refuse to pay tax money to fix this cement grave site.
Daryl Hill quit last week so that kind of alleviates the need to fire him
I REFUSE TO PAY TAX MONEY TO FIX THIS CEMENT CIVIL CENTER.
I REFUSE TO PAY TAX MONEY FOR SUNKIN DONUTS STADIUM.
you already have paid
And Kevin, they will pay even more.

Good observation, however MDC has never paid a dime in real estate tax and is doing it's best to never pay a dime in the future.
Kev , No one ever mentions unsustainable programs like NINA ,most of these “homeowners” in gorgeous renovated Asylum homes pay around $600 bucks a year in property tax for about a decade . That maybe pays for garbage and leaf pickup .
Good catch! Forgot about that!
